In 1674, Marquette set out from near present day Green Bay, Wisconsin to work with Kaskaskia Indians near Ottawa, Illinois. However, he became ill after three weeks with them, and left for South St. Marie. He contracted dysentery on the way and died in the woods off Lake Michigan. He was 38 years old.
